Communication coaching for managers in public sector organisation

The client organisation, a major public sector body, needed to cut its budget by 30 per cent through voluntary redundancy and early retirement and changes to working practices. The challenge was to retain and motivate high-performing staff while encouraging others to take up the leaving packages. I was asked to coach five managers in the organisation to be able to hold sensitive conversations – formal and informal – with team members to help facilitate the change.

I delivered one-to-one coaching ‘workouts’ to support managers with their specific challenges. Managers booked a session at short notice just before they met with their staff. I worked with them on giving bad news, helping staff deal with uncertainty, giving constructive feedback and learning to manage their own emotional reactions. I also ran workshops for the managers as a small group.

The coaching received enthusiastic reviews from managers. They reported an immediate increase in their levels of confidence and their ability to bring about the outcomes they wanted.
